Freak Grotesk Next is a responsive multi-glyphs typeface developed during XYZ 2017, an independent and collaborative workshop with an Open Source approach, that takes place every Summer in Bari (Italy) @ La Scuola Open Source. Our aim was to hack an existing typeface: HK Grotesk and add some custom Open Type features such as responsiveness, and the ability to easily exchange the glyphs with some custom designed letterforms. The Bold version is also in Free Download on GitHub, where you can also contribute to the open repository as the typeface is still in development. Designed in only 7 days by a team of 6 people and 2 tutors. You can see more about the project here and admire the typeface shown on school’s website.
Alessio D’Ellena and Daniele Capo have been our tutors during the whole workshop. They showed us a professional approach to take when designing letterforms passing from paper to digital.
